IOWA CITY, Iowa - No. 18 Iowa became Ball State's first opponent this season to fail to score on its first drive Saturday.
But the Hawkeyes wouldn't be delayed for long, and took a 7-0 lead on running back Adam Robinson's one-yard scamper. It would be the only scoring by either team in the first quarter.
More than a seven-point deficit on the scoreboard, Ball State may have suffered a significant loss already. Tight end Zane Fakes had to be helped off the field by trainers on the Cardinals' second offensive play. He remained on the bench throughout the quarter with ice wrapped around his right knee.
Ball State's offense was unable to get anything going against Iowa's stout defense. The Cardinals had only 23 yards of offense, 11 coming on one pass from Keith Wenning to tight end Aaron Mershman.
