INDIANAPOLIS — State education officials say a summer learning program helped 3,000 Indiana students make academic gains over the summer — a time when many students forget some of the skills they've learned in school.
Students in the Summer Advantage USA program gained more than two months of progress in English and math over the five weeks of the program. The state says students traditionally lose two to three months of learning in the summer.
The program's tuition of about $1,000 per student was paid for by state and federal grants. Students attend five days a week and get instruction in reading and math, as well as enrichment classes such as art or engineering.
Officials tell The Indianapolis Star the program gives students renewed confidence when they head back to school in the fall.
