Charlie Cardinal tryouts to be held Tuesday

The Ball State Athletics Department is looking for another student or two to fill the big yellow feet of Charlie Cardinal.

Like Bruce Wayne or Peter Parker, the student in the bird costume is not allowed to reveal his alter ego. If Charlie Cardinal talks or reveals his identity while in costume, he will be dismissed of his responsibilities, Kyle Ward, mascot coordinator and graduate student with Ball State Athletics, said.

Charlie Cardinal tryouts will take place at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the Worthen Arena Media Room (WR 203). Students who plan to try out need to attend an informational meeting at 7 p.m. today in WR 203.

Male and female students are welcome to try out, Ward said. A four-year Charlie Cardinal veteran said students will be asked to perform a two-minute dance and skit to music they provide. They'll be asked to dance to the school fight song while wearing the costume and walk the "Charlie Walk" with confidence.

Students who apply must attend Ball State full time and have a grade-point average of 2.0. Charlie Cardinal is an icon at home football, basketball and men's and women's volleyball games. He also makes appearances around Muncie, such as local business openings and pep rallies.

The veteran student mascot offers some words of advice to students before he and the panel of current mascots help make a decision Tuesday night.

"Have a free spirit," he said. "Be goofy. If you're having fun in the suit, it comes through. We can see that you're having fun. That's what we're looking for."
