Ball State hosts Indiana State Senate debate

The Office of Student Life is sponsoring a debate between Sue Errington, the state senator for Indiana District 26, and Republican candidate Doug Eckerty at 7:30 tonight in the L.A. Pittenger Student Center Cardinal Hall.

Mitch Isaacs, associate director of Student Life, said the debate will last one hour and consist of a two-minute opening statement from each candidate, 20 minutes of questions from moderators, 20 minutes of audience questions and two minutes of closing statements from each candidate.

Roger Hollands, professor emeritus of political science, and Ray Scheele, co-director of the Bowen Center for Public Affairs and a political science professor, will moderate the debate.

Isaacs said each candidate will have one minute to respond to each question and can follow up with a 30-second rebuttal.

Nolan Born, University Democrats president, said his organization will be at the debate.

"We will have a voter registration table there, and some of our students will probably participate in some of the things that need to be done," Born said.

Like University Democrats, College Republicans will set up a booth before the debate, registering voters and promoting their candidates, Holly Gillham, public relations chairwoman, said.

Michael Thomas, technology chairman for College Republicans, said the group hopes the debate will have a good turnout. He said although he has not seen many active students in this election, he hopes to see them go out and participate in the senate debate.

The event is free and open to the public. Seating will be first come, first served.
