Transgender woman pleased with hospital's response

MUNCIE, Ind. (AP) — A transgender woman says she's satisfied with changes being made by a Muncie hospital a month after she complained of being ridiculed by hospital staff and denied treatment in its emergency room.

Ball Memorial Hospital announced Tuesday that all employees will receive mandatory lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender awareness training starting in September.

Erin Vaught complained that she was referred to as a "he-she" and "it" by hospital staffers after she arrived the emergency room coughing up blood on July 18. Vaught called the hospital's training plan a "positive resolution" and that she believed the hospital would do the right thing after meetings with Ball Memorial president Michael Haley and others.

Haley apologized to Vaught and said the hospital failed to meet its promise of care.
