Taylor University student to talk about religious experience at Ball State

Megan Sharp, a master's student at Taylor University, will be spending time with students and community members to talk about her religious experiences during a nine-month stay in Bangalore, India.

At 7:30 p.m., Sharp will be presenting "Hindu-Christian Meeting Point: From Water to Wisdom in India" at the Center for Peace and Conflict Studies. The event is sponsored by the Muncie Interfaith Fellowship, who stage religious speakers on the last Monday of each month, excluding December.

George Wolfe, coordinator of Outreach Programs at the Center for Peace and Conflict Studies, said Sharp's presentation will be different than those it usually sponsors.

"Megan will be speaking about her meaningful experiences with the Indian culture and Hindu religion," he said. "She is our first speaker to be affiliated with one religious tradition and become immersed within another religious tradition."

With a degree in environmental science, Sharp has worked to create an ecofriendly campus for secondary schools.

A member of Hazelwood Christian Church, Sharp was able to make the trip to India through a Christian-based program called Agricultural, Craft and Trade Studies. In India, she was able to experience different cultural and religious settings throughout the country.

Sharp will be discussing the time she spent engaged in both private Hindu festivals at various family homes and larger, organized religious celebrations she experienced along the Ganges River.

"I will be talking about my struggles in my faith I experienced in attempt to explore Hindu culture," she said. "Also, I'll be talking about what it took to assimilate my experience to the Christian community."

Sharp's talk will include a Powerpoint presentation with photos, but the main focus will be group discussion. Those attending will have the opportunity to ask Sharp questions, and there will be a discussion on her experience.
