SOCCER: Ball State downs IUPUI; remains undefeated

BIg Ten foe looms

It took Ball State less than a minute to show their 2-0 record is for real.

Thirty seconds into Friday's game against IUPUI, senior midfielder Missy Gordon scored the first goal and Ball State never looked back.

Freshman forward Robyn Miley scored in the 44th minute, before Gordon added her second goal six minutes later. It was Gordon's first career multi-goal game.

The 3-0 victory kept the Cardinals undefeated on the season, improving their record to 3-0.

In three matches, five different players have scored for Ball State. Only Gordon has more than one goal on the season.

"I think it [different scorers] shows we are threat from all regions of the field," said Ball State coach Craig Roberts. "Everyone is taking control of their moments and capitalizing. We have been working on our offense in the final third and it showed tonight."

Tough defense allowed sophomore Aubrey Buehler and freshman Layne Schramm to combine for the team's second consecutive shut out in goal.

"The defense is really a testament to how well we are playing," Gordon said. "They come in and perform every game and are a brick wall back there."

Approaching Sunday's matchup with Illinois, the stage is set for an interesting match up.

After the one-sided performance against IUPUI, Ball State will ride their confidence into the game poised for an upset.

"We have to go play a Big Ten school at their home stadium and play to their level," Gordon said. "They are a lot bigger and a lot faster so we need to up our game twice as much as we did tonight. But anything is possible, especially since we are playing well right now."

Coming off such a disappointing year last year, the team leaps on any opportunity to show they are a new team.

"Sunday will be a huge test to see where we are at," Gordon said. "Not many people really understand what it is like to play us until they get on the field. We shock opponents and take them by surprise and by the time they adjust to our system they can't come back. They are already a few goals down and we've got them."

If they pull of the upset, Illinois will become the fourth victim of this new, focused Ball State team.
