Although most fall sports haven't started, the Mid-American Conference announced its first players of the week for soccer on Monday.
Forward Katie Wise of Akron and midfielder Sarah Dessfelt of Miami were named Co-Offensive Players of the Week, while Central Michigan's Liesel Toth received defensive honors. After starting the season 2-0, Ball State forward Paige Stroinski and defender Brigit Reder earned nominations.
Wise recorded a hat trick in 3:07 of game time in Akron's 3-0 win against defending Missouri Valley Conference champions and preseason favorite Illinois State. Dessfelt had a hat trick and assist Saturday in Miami's record-setting 15-0 season-opening win against Alabama A&M.
Toth played all 180 minutes in a pair of Central Michigan shutout victories against Wright State and IPFW. The Chippewas allowed only six shots in the two matches, including only one against the Mastadons on Sunday.
Stroinski and Reder had good performances for Ball State, which is 2-0 for the first time since 2005. Stroinski scored the deciding goal in the 69th minute of Ball State's 2-1 season-opening win against Xavier on Friday. Reder also led a defense that shut out Indiana State on Sunday and added an assist on the game's only goal.
