Judi Egbert, assistant professor of social work, is saying goodbye to Ball State on Thursday after 22 years of service.
A reception honoring Egbert for her work at Ball State is at 3 p.m. today in the Music Lounge on the second floor of the L.A. Pittenger Student Center. All students, staff and faculty are invited to the reception.
Egbert began as an instructor in 1988 and has since become practicum coordinator. In her 22 years at Ball State, Egbert has affected many students through her participation in various programs, which all promoted human rights, according a Ball State press release.
Egbert has participated in many social work programs on and off campus. She was an avid supporter of Legislative Education and Advocacy Day at the statehouse and the state National Association for Social Workers' Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Committee.
Closer to campus, Egbert has participated in Teamwork for Quality Living; Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays, Indiana Academy for Sciences and Humanities, Delaware County Coalition for Human Services, Habitat for Humanity; and National Organization for Women.
Large advocacy efforts related to housing, women's rights, gender and sexual orientation equity have taken Egbert to Washington, D.C. on several occasions as well.
Beginning her studies in social work at the University of Michigan in 1971, Egbert has also had involvement in the Peace Corps, where she taught special education in Sri Lanka.
Leaving Ball State to move to Seattle, the university is celebrating Egbert's career and future outside of the university.
Alison Gillespie, administrative coordinator, said it has been an honor to work with Egbert.
"Judi has served as a vibrant leader of our practicum program, mentor to many students and a good colleague to faculty and staff," she said. "We wish her well in all of her future endeavors."
