LETTER FROM THE EDITOR: Welcome back to Ball State

Every year, it seems like summer goes by faster.

Maybe it's something that happens as you age. I'm going to be optimistic and hope that it just seems that way with the return to school and studying on the horizon.

Regardless, here we are – back at Ball State. Some are brand new and probably feel a mixture of excitement and nausea. Those of us who are in our seventh (or ninth, or twelfth) semester simply add this to our growing list of first weeks.

At the Daily News, we want to start things off right. That's what this first issue is all about. To help you do the same, we have guides to downtown Muncie and dorm "must-haves" in 72Hrs, our entertainment and lifestyle section. If you want to learn about your new home, we have a list of Ball State landmarks and traditions that every student should know.

Even if it's your first semester, you'll probably notice quite a few changes to campus. Over the summer, construction crews ramped up their production and got the Neely Avenue, Kinghorn Hall and Student Recreation and Wellness Center projects nearly completed before move-in. We devoted a whole section to construction and campus' changing face to help you catch up.

Along with details about the new Recreation Center, we have a story explaining some club sports and intramural activities available in our sports section. Make sure to check out the top five storylines to watch for this upcoming sports season. And for those of you pumped for the return of college football, flip to Pages B4 and B5 to find out what you need to know about the upcoming season.

Typically, the season is primed for speakers as well. Ball State has Karl Rove, the deputy chief of staff and senior adviser to President George W. Bush, coming to talk about the importance of midterm elections Sept. 13. If that's not your cup of tea, Jamie Tworkowski, the founder of To Write Love on Her Arms, will visit Pruis Hall on Nov. 8.

In the rest of the news section, read about why enrollment is down and parking (and ice water) fees are up, as well as SGA , campus crime, greek life and the newest Village bar, Be Here Now.

And don't forget to let us know if there is something you care about and want to see. This is a newspaper for the students, after all.
