HEAD: Parking services raises costs for permits, add new parking lot

Changes are happening everywhere around campus with construction, new buildings and even Parking Services. This year Parking Services raised the cost of parking permits, and also added a new parking lot at Kinghorn Hall.

While parking lots such as the lot behind the Johnson Complex have been the site of construction, Jim Lowe, director of engineering, construction and operations said the parking lot would be reestablished for the fall semester.

"With the piping, we took every opportunity to get through the problem areas like Lafollette and Carmichael when you can't during the academic year because of service vehicles and other construction areas," Lowe said.

Nancy Wray, Parking Services office manger, said with the construction last year, Parking Services were worried about overselling the permits, not so much this year.

But with the establishment of one new parking lot, students still need to understand the proper places for parking, Wray said.

"Freshmen living in the residence halls can only park at the stadium and they need to be aware of football games and where they will need to move their car," Wray said.

Parking Services works to make students aware of when they need to move their car, Wray said. With emails and posted signs, Wray said it is still up to students to move their cars at the proper time.

But students also get an "Oops Voucher,"  where if one parking mistake was made, Parking Services gives students one free opportunity to get out of a ticket within five days of the citation.

For students who will be picking up their pass this semester, Parking Services, located in the basement of the L.A. Pittinger Student Center, has a specific line for students who will be picking up their paid for parking pass and those who have to apply and pay for a pass. Upperclassmen issued a stadium parking pass can also stop by or call the office to be put on a waiting list for a different permit.

Wray said this system alleviates a lot of the wait for students and also helps out the Parking Services office.

Parking Services also has other options for students on campus including the Campus Shuttle Buses, which provide free transportation throughout campus Monday through Friday and on Sunday, Charlie's Charter, providing transportation after campus shuttles stop running, and the Motorist Assistance Program, providing assistance to motorists encountering vehicle problems on campus.
