Greek Life to offer fraternity housing tours, information session

Representing 8 percent of the population with numbers on the rise since Fall 2009, Ball State's Greek Life will be showcasing its homes and members to students interested in learning more about the greek community.

From 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, students can get tours of fraternity houses while learning more about the different chapters on campus.

Austin Gerber, president of the Interfraternity Council, said this event is one of the few opportunities students will have to get a tour of every fraternity house and meet the members who reside there.

"Showcasing the fraternity houses and residing members gives us a chance to show the male BSU population of the greek housing and involvement opportunities students can experience during their college career," Gerber said.

While only fraternities with houses are participating in the block bash, chapters who do not have houses still have options, too.

"Chapters who do not have houses have an opportunity to invite potentials over to either a reserved area on campus or one of their satellite houses in order to educate male students about their brotherhood," Gerber said.

Paul Desmond, intern recruitment chair for FIJI, said the Block Bash is a great chance for freshmen and interested students to learn about the chapters before recruitment week in the first week of September.

"It's a great opportunity for a freshmen that don't have a lot of knowledge on fraternities to gain the positive information like GPA, involvement in the community, and that is the knowledge that goes unnoticed sometimes," Desmond said.

The Block Bash marks the beginning of the school year and the beginning of the recruitment period for the greek community. So far Gerber said recruitment is working at a good pace and officials are expecting a solid turnout.

"This is a recruitment tool to help chapters meet potential new members," he said. "This also serves as an educational tool for male students to observe and learn about Greek Life housing."
