FOOTBALL: Assistant coach's tweet shows Ball State's 2010 captains

Would be first season with four captains in years

After a disappointing 2-10 record in 2009, the Ball State football team needs as much leadership as it can get.

That fact wasn't lost on coach Stan Parrish or his players. Seniors MiQuale Lewis, Michael Switzer and Davyd Jones along with junior safety Sean Baker will be the Cardinals' captains this fall, according to a tweet from Ball State offensive line coach Jason Eck.

The tweet, which was published Sunday at 10:42 p.m., congratulated Lewis, Switzer, Jones and Baker for being named captains for 2010. The Ball State athletics department has yet to release an official announcement. The program has never had more than three team captains for the past several seasons.

Lewis, entering his fifth season after being granted a medical redshirt, is expected to carry a heavy load for Ball State's offense. After setting the Cardinals' single-season rushing record in 2008, he finished last season with 871 yards and five touchdowns. He enters his final season 689 rushing yards from setting the program's career rushing record.

Baker, a redshirt junior, had one of the best rookie seasons in Ball State history when he was named Mid-American Conference Freshman of the Year and selected to the Sporting News Freshman All-American Team in 2008.

When Baker's stats dipped last season, his influence on the team didn't. Baker regularly sparked a defense that has played inconsistently throughout his career.

Switzer assumed a leadership role after Ball State graduated four offensive linemen from its 2008 team. The only offensive line starter remaining from the Cardinals' 12-0 run in 2008, Switzer has started all 39 games in his career.

Jones, who has appeared in 38 career games, is a local product who played at Muncie Central High School. He led Ball State with 100 tackles and finished third with eight tackles for loss in 2009.
