Ball State's University Senate prepares for new year

It changed the core curriculum two years ago and strengthened students' rights in the academic honestly policy, but it did not come up with a plan to replace Fruesday. It is the University Senate.

The Senate's primary responsibility is to deal with decisions regarding educational policies at Ball State, according to the organization's constitution.

Eric Kelly, chairman of University Senate, said the governing body has students and staff as members but is dominated mostly by faculty. There are currently 56 members: one faculty member from each of 38 departments, two contract faculty members, six professional personnel and 10 students. The Senate maintains three Senate Councils: the Campus Council, Faculty Council and University Council.

Kelly said the University Senate's main agenda topic affecting students this year is the change to the teacher evaluation process.

The issue at hand would be switching the current written evaluations to an online format. The main problem, Kelly said, is that students do not fill evaluations out when they are posted online.

Some departments have already moved their evaluations to online but the student response rate has been poor, which is a concern, Kelly said. One solution to the lack of participation is to hold students grades until all forms are filled out. Rather than punishing students, though, the Senate needs to find a way to work for everyone, he said.

"Usually the students that complete the evaluations are mad at you or they love you. We want to hear from those students in the middle," Kelly said.
