Ball State students end first day with UPB concert

A modest crowd was rocked last night at the Welcome Week Opening Concert by the deep booming vocals and foot-tapping beats of Columbus, Ohio, band Red Wanting Blue.

The 136 attendees, including freshman music technology major Aaron Anderson, surrounded the stage during the bands hour and a half long set, which kicked off Welcome Week.

"I heard about the concert through my e-mail so I looked them up on YouTube and had an eargasm," Anderson said.

Dillon Kimmel, University Program Board vice president of marketing, said he was satisfied with the show but that the turn out could have been better.

"We had some issues with venue this year," he said "We weren't able to use some of the outdoor venues we would normally use like LaFollette Field or University Green because of the geothermal project on campus."

Despite the subpar attendance, those who did make it to Welcome Week's opening concert seemed to enjoy what they heard, including freshman Hunter Gibbons, who said he really enjoyed the band's sound.

"There aren't really many real rock bands left so it's really cool to see one like this play," said Gibbons. "I thought they performed really well."

Red Wanting Blue formed in 1996 by Scott Terry and has since recorded six studio albums. The group is known for its rigorous tour schedules.

The band will continue its fall tour, stopping at various college campuses and other larger venues across the Midwest.

Welcome Week events continue with comedian Dan Mengini in Pruis Hall on Wednesday at 9 p.m. and the Quad Bash, which will include food, live music, "Iron Man 2" and a Slip 'n Slide on Friday from 6 to 11 p.m.
