Muncie cancels Fourth of July parade

While several Indiana towns and cities have suffered a lack of funds this year to put together their Fourth of July celebrations, Muncie faced was a lack of participation.

Muncie Downtown Development Partnership had to cancel their July third parade Tuesday due to lack of participation.

Cheryl Crowder, program manager of Downtown Development, said although the parade is not an annual event - this would have been their fifth parade - the idea to have it this year came out because it fell on a Saturday, a day before the City of Muncie's fireworks displays.

"We were just trying to add something extra for people that were in town over the weekend."

The parade, which would have started Saturday at 6 p.m. at Muncie Central High School and gone down two downtown streets, unexpectedly lacked political participation as well. In this year's St. Patrick's Day parade, 36 out of the 45 entrees were politically geared.

"We thought it would make sense [to have the parade] this year," she said. "But six parade entries is not a great thing. It's a political year, so there are many campaigners out there. St. Patrick's day was huge with candidates, so I really kind of expected to see more of that than we got a response from, but it just wasn't there."

However, Muncie's annual fireworks on the levee will still take place Sunday, starting after sunset. Other cities in Indiana had to cancel some of their celebrations for this year's Fourth of July.

In Indianapolis, the Downtown Fourth Fest at the American Legion Mall had been sponsored in the past by radio station WFMS-FM. But a lack of funds had the station cancel this year's festival.
