Neely Avenue and Kinghorn Hall are only two of the many construction projects Ball State University expects to have completed by the start of the next academic year. Whether it's building renovations or new dining locations, students will enjoy some new sites on campus when they come back from their break.
Although it is not expected to be completed by Fall 2010, Jim Lowe, director of engineering, planning and operations, said North Quad is under way. North Quad was divided into three sections and the first phase is being completed on the west side of the building.
These are the facilities that will be available by the end of the summer:
Student Wellness and Recreation Center
The actual completion date for the project is early August and the contractor is on schedule, Lowe said. The contractor is working on the landscaping around the building, and there is a portion of the building that will be completed by September.
Geothermal project
As an addition to the buildings and streets on campus being renovated, phase one of the geothermal heating and cooling system project will be completed in a couple weeks, where crews are extending distribution piping, according to a Ball State Daily News article. The project is expected to be completed in 10 years.
Lucina Hall
The new welcome center for admissions is to be completed by the Fall Semester and is on schedule, Lowe said.
Glick Center for Glass
The Glick Center for Glass is weeks away from being finished. The university will receive the new furnace equipment sometime in July and it will be connected and tried out to be usable in the fall.
W.B. Trading Lab
As a part of the Miller College of Business, the trading lab will be completed in August for occupancy.
Jamba Juice
Jamba Juice is expected to be completed the first week of August, when equipment has to be moved in, tried and set up. By the start of Fall Semester classes it should be completed.
South side of L.A. Pittenger Student Center
There is a new entry way being installed on the south side of the student center which will help visitors access the south side of the student center, allowing them to drop off a passenger, and turn a 180 and head back to College Avenue. That side of the student center is expected to be completed by fall, Lowe said.
Studebaker West
As part of maintenance for all residence halls, the university is enhancing the fire alarm and sprinkler systems. The project is on schedule, and is expected to be completed by the first weeks of August.
Any of the projects that have exterior works were affected by the rain, but the weather has been working better with construction work, Lowe said. He said he expects all projects to be completed in time.
"Since the weather has been really coming easy for construction in the past two weeks, everybody has to work the hours required to make up that time," he said.
