Fort Wayne announces it will recall 149 laid off teachers

FORT WAYNE (AP) — Fort Wayne's school board says nearly half of the district's 311 laid off teachers will have jobs this fall.

The Fort Wayne Community Schools Board voted Monday to recall 149 teachers. Teachers remaining laid off will find out next week whether they have a job after union leaders determine who else will be called back to work.

Board president Mark GiaQuinta says estimates suggest that fewer than 91 teachers will lose their jobs.

The board voted this spring to issue layoff notices to 311 teachers as it worked to make $15 million in budget cuts.

The Indiana State Teachers Association has estimated a stateside loss of perhaps 7,000 teaching jobs through layoffs or attrition this year.
