There will be a power outage at the LaFollette Complex Towers on Saturday from 1 to 3 a.m. as another step is taken for Ball State University's geothermal project.
The outage will affect LaFollette Complex for two hours while its current connection is changed to a new permanent circuit, electrical engineer Jack Willis said.
The connection that goes to LaFollette is in the middle of the connection that will go to the new geothermal piping. This piping will start at the future energy stations that will exchange the heat and send it to buildings that need it. The conductors will be re-routed to an alternate path to continue providing electrical services to LaFollette Towers.
Willis said the power outage should last two hours if everything goes according to their plans.
"If we are successful with our plan, all electrical power work will be finished by 3 am [Saturday] morning," Willis said. "The back-up plan calls for us to finish the work this Sunday morning between 1 a.m. and 3 a.m. at which time there would be a second power outage."
However, Willis said there is a "high degree of probability that the work will be done on time and the second outage should not be needed."
LaFollette is the only residence hall open to students living on-campus during the summer sessions.
Ball State notified students of the two-hour power outage Friday afternoon through a campus-wide e-mail. In the e-mail, the university also advised students living in LaFollette to turn off their computers before power outage is scheduled to start.
