Ball State fixes geothermal project connection issue after blacking out LaFollette for 2 hours

All work required to reconnect the LaFollette Towers to their new power circuit was completed Saturday morning. There will be no need for a second power outage, electrical engineer Jack Willis said.

LaFollette Complex, the only residence hall open to students living on campus during summer sessions, was affected by the outage Saturday from 1 to 3 a.m

Ball State notified students of the two-hour power outage Friday afternoon through a campus-wide e-mail. The university advised students living in LaFollette to turn off their computers before the power outage was scheduled to start.

A power outage was required because the connection that goes to LaFollette was in the middle of the connection that will go to the new geothermal piping. This piping will start at the future energy stations that will exchange the heat and send it to buildings that need it.

The conductors were re-routed to an alternate path to continue providing electrical services to LaFollette Towers. The geothermal piping can now be installed underground, west of the towers, Willis said.
