Muncie Community Schools to hold public hearing

Muncie Community Schools will hold public hearings to share a report and recommendations from the Blue Ribbon Task Force, a group doing a strategic study for Muncie Community Schools.

Muncie School Superintendent Eric King and his senior staff will hold two public hearings on May 18 at Northside Middle School's auditorium and May 25 at Southside High School's auditorium. Both of these sessions will take place at 6 p.m.

At each of these sessions, King and his staff will present a summary of the Blue Ribbon Task Force recommendations. King will give a PowerPoint presentation, which will provide a summary of the Blue Ribbon Task Force Report that was written this past March. After the summary of the recommendations, the floor will be opened up to comments from the community members. People in attendance of these two meetings will be given a copy of the Executive Summary of the Blue Ribbon Task Force findings.

Each meeting will go through the same process so that different members of the community will have a chance to voice their opinions.

Associate Superintendent Mark Burkhart said no interaction or debate is expected at these meetings between the administrative staff and the residents in attendance. He said the purpose of the meetings is for the administrative staff to hear the opinions of the public.

There will also be a session held at the Muncie Central High School cafeteria on June 15, where there will be small discussion groups with up to eight people per group. A Blue Ribbon Task Force member will lead each of these small groups. At this meeting, there will be a chance for 33 groups to discuss the Blue Ribbon Task Force recommendations. Each group will report their opinions to the rest of the audience after the discussions. The Blue Ribbon Task Force will then produce a written report of its findings at this particular meeting and present it to the school board.

Burkhart said these discussion groups give members of the community a less inhibiting environment to discuss their opinions. He said some people might not be comfortable standing up in front of a big audience and giving their opinion. These small focus groups give the community members a chance to speak their opinions in a different environment compared with the other two sessions.

Burkhart said after the three sessions, the Muncie school board will then begin public deliberations on which next steps it will take.
