INDOT grants more than 900,000 for bridge renovation

The Indiana highway department has granted almost $1 million in federal funds to replace a potentially unsafe, 105-year-old bridge northeast of Muncie.

The Indiana Department of Transportation classifies the bridge, which was built in 1905, as "structurally deficient." INDOT approved $943,400 in highway money to replace the structure, which crosses the Mississinewa River northeast of Muncie.

Preliminary designs call for a 220 foot long and 30 foot wide bridge, with construction expected to begin in the fall of 2011, said Angela Moyer, a project director for the county. The work should take about six months, Moyer said Wednesday afternoon.

This grant is in addition to a 2006 grant of $1.42 million provided by the Federal Highway Administration's Local Public Agency Bridge Program.

The bridge is on County Road 800 East near Albany and is the main route into town from the south.

"It will make a big difference for that community," Moyer said.
