Weather possible factor for small turnout at Carnival

The gloomy weather Saturday may have caused some people to stay inside, but the people who went to the Late Nite Carnival were able to use it to their advantage.

Junior music education major Lee Ann Vandenbark said the reason she went to the Carnival was because of the lack of people.

"I waited an hour-and-a-half in line my freshman year," she said. "I saw that there weren't very many people, so I came and I've been able to get right on just about all the rides."

Vandenbark said she had enjoyed the Carnival in the past, but the crowds were always too much of a hassle.

"There just aren't any crowds [Saturday]," she said.

Yorktown resident Todd St. John said the overcast weather made the day better.

"I think the weather is perfect," he said. "There's no hot sun and there's a little breeze, but it's not too cold. It's a benefit on the blacktop and the rain has held off."

St. John said his family and his daughters' friends were able to get more out of their day with the weather.

"It cut down the crowd, but that was a benefit to us," he said. "The kids were able ride everything without really having to wait in line."

St. John said he was also impressed with how big the Carnival was.

"It's definitely a lot bigger than I thought it would be," he said. "The price is right – $5. It's great."

Muncie resident Christina Miller said she was also happy with the price of the Carnival.

"I didn't expect it to be so cheap," she said.

Miller said she was happily surprised at how many kid-friendly rides there were that her 4-year-old daughter could ride.

"I didn't think they would have a lot, especially rides she can get on," she said. "It's better than the [Delaware County] fair."

Junior psychology and Japanese major Gisele Berzenye said she was pleasantly surprised by the size of the Carnival.

"I wasn't expecting it to be this awesome," she said. "It's like a real carnival. I was expecting like one ride and a game."

Hannah Harrison, Late Nite adviser and assistant director for programs, said she thought the rain Friday night might have influenced students to not attend Saturday. Since it was overcast, students probably thought it would rain Saturday as well, she said.

Harrison said attendance started to pick up at 3 p.m., possibly because people thought the rain would hold off.

"It's hard to tell how much [attendance] was related to weather," she said. "But either way, I'm really happy with the turnout."

Berzenye said the weather wasn't a deterring factor for her.

"It's not raining, so why should I care?" she said.
