VOLLEYBALL: New women's coach Shondell to still announce Ball State men's volleyball matches

Being named the Ball State University women's volleyball head coach won't keep Steve Shondell from his other responsibilities in the athletics department.

Five days after being hired as the new Cardinals coach, Shondell will continue to be the Ball State men's volleyball team's public address announcer.

Shondell has been the team's public address announcer at home matches for about five seasons.

Ball State men's volleyball coach Joel Walton and players have often called Shondell one of the best public address announcers in the nation because of his knowledge of the game.

Shondell, who was an all-conference player at Ball State in the 1970s, is also known for his unique style of calling matches. Part of that style includes giving Ball State players nicknames such as "The Bulldog" for starting middle attacker J.D. Gasparovic and "The Wizard of Worthen Arena" for starting outside attacker Larry Wrather.

Shondell replaced Dave Boos as head coach of the women's volleyball team on Tuesday after Boos resigned in March to take an assistant coach position at the University of Florida. Prior to coming to Ball State, Shondell coached the Burris Laboratory School girl's volleyball team and won 13 consecutive state titles.

Ball State will play No. 13 Loyola University in its regular season finale at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Worthen Arena.
