Student performers will have their chance to show what they can do in front of a crowd tonight at University Program Board's Open Mic Night.
Ball State University students are encouraged to support their peers and see them showcase their talents at 7 p.m. in Art and Journalism Building Room 175.
The event is the third one of the semester and Dillon Kimmel, vice president of marketing for UPB, is expecting a good turnout.
"We've had anywhere from 75 to 150 people show up to our previous open mic nights," he said. "We got enough acts to fill the two hours and even had some spectators. That was not expected."
Kimmel said the high attendance was due to the great job Matt Kepler has done promoting the events.
"Matt's been out at the Scramble Light handing out candy and encouraging people to come out to the open mic night," he said.
Participants will be able to sign up for their acts tonight and are asked to keep them less than 10 minutes. Kimmel also said the variety of acts has helped with the popularity of the events.
"There have been mostly acoustic performances and small bands, but some people come out and do a small stand-up routine or read poetry," he said. "We encourage everyone to come out and diversify the program."
The event stemmed from UPB's Wired, which helps showcase small student bands.
"We don't think there are enough outlets for students to give people a voice, so these events give them the confidence to perform in a small, intimate setting," Kimmel said.
