Purchasing Services warns against toner scams

Ball State University Purchasing Services has advised departments to be on the look out for scams involving toner for printers, copiers and fax machines.

Director of Purchasing Rhodene Upchurch said various departments throughout Ball State frequently receive calls from scammers presenting themselves as a printing business. They ask for certain information about printers, copiers and fax machines, send matching toner and charge the department. Sometimes the scammers catch receptionists off-guard, and they end up paying for something that wasn't ordered.

The scams target employees who are unaware.

Upchurch said Ball State has seen similar schemes in the past few years. The companies usually do send the product, but they overcharge. When the product arrives at the receiving dock, it is usually refused or immediately discarded.

If an unsolicited caller asks for information about equipment, employees should ask for a name and phone number to call them back. This usually results in the caller hanging up. If an employee is pushed further, he or she should transfer the call to Purchasing Services at 765-285-1532.

Upchurch said she reports companies with scams like this to the Better Business Bureau. She said several articles cover this type of scheme and some companies have been reported to the attorney general.
