Life is fleeting. As cliché as it may sound, we are reminded of it all the time.
When senior communications studies major Abbi Hamilton died in an all-terrain vehicle accident April 10, the Ball State community came together to honor her memory.
Abbi's mother, Cathy Hamilton, sent an e-mail to the Daily News recently, expressing her gratitude for the cards, flowers and pictures she'd received. She was also humbled by the candlelight vigil, and especially wanted to thank the Department of Communication Studies and Alpha Phi sorority for their support.
Cathy said Abbi loved Ball State and thanked the community for being a part of her life.
Sadly, you might not know how much someone means until they are no longer around to tell.
Each one of us affects the other, sometimes without even realizing it. Just sending a card to someone who helped you out, or to honor someone's memory, can leave a big mark. The effects of a simple smile or nod hello might brighten someone's day.
As the end of another school year approaches, it's only fitting to reflect on the paths you've crossed.
And, as the number of days left dips lower and lower, we slowly come to the realization that the group of people around us right now might never be the same again.
While many are returning to Ball State for another year, some of us are leaving the university. A few might be transferring or leaving to pursue other paths.
Despite the changes we all undergo, or the confusion or uncertainty we might feel about a new direction, it's doubtless that great memories were made along the way.
Wherever your life takes you, don't forget the people you met along the way.
You might have had a bigger impact than you realize.
