MEN'S VOLLEYBALL: No. 13 Ball State sweeps IPFW, advances to play No. 10 Ohio State in semifinals

The No. 13 Ball State University men's volleyball team will get its rematch against No. 10 Ohio State in the conference tournament.

Ball State swept IPFW 30-28, 30-23, 30-22 in the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association Tournament quarterfinals on Saturday at Worthen Arena to advance semifinals against Ohio State.

The Buckeyes have defeated the Cardinals the last three seasons in the MIVA Tournament, including sweeping Ball State the last two years in the conference championship match.

As the No. 1 seed and MIVA regular season champions, the Buckeyes received a bye to the semifinals match against the Cardinals. That match will be played at 7 p.m. Wednesday in Columbus, Ohio.

In its quarterfinals victory, Ball State out-hit IPFW .330 to .137 and had four players with at least 10 kills.

Outside attacker Eric Schulte had a match-high 12 kills. In addition, middle attackers Anders Nelson, J.D. Gasparovic and outside attacker Lee Meyer each had 11 kills.

Gasparovic, a First-Team All-MIVA player, also had a match-high seven blocks.

The Cardinals extended their winning streak against the Mastodons to seven matches, including winning all three matches this season.

IPFW outside attackers Darryl Shank and Elon Fyfield each had a team-high 10 kills in the loss.

This is the third consecutive season IPFW (12-17, 4-9 MIVA) has lost in the first round of the conference tournament. The Mastodons have not won a postseason match since advancing to the 2007 NCAA championship.
