Members of organizations had mixed views of the turnout of their Earth Day event in Cardinal Hall at the L.A. Pittenger Student Center on Thursday.
The Earth Day celebration was put together by the Natural Resources Club and other environmental organizations on campus. There were booths with information, a sustainable clothing drive, games and other activities. More than 100 people showed up for the event.
The Ball State chapter of Wild Life Society brought snakes to the event, to show students about a part of the environment. Erica Welker, member of the Ball State chapter, said many people went to their booth to see the snakes and pet them.
"We thought of bringing something that represents wild life, and we thought snakes. They are part of the environment," she said. "We wanted to show them to people so in the future they don't think about killing snakes in their garden."
Welker said she thought the event had a good outcome.
"People seemed to be interested," she said. "A lot of people knew about the event and they found us."
But Nicole Walcott, member of the Ball State Energy Action Team said she wanted to see more people go to the event.
"Next year I would like to see maybe more students ready to engage on what we have to offer," she said.
Despite the numbers of those that showed up, Natural Resources Club secretary Linsi Latimer said the event served as a way to spread the message about environmental issues.
"I would for more students to show up [next year]," Latimer said. "I would say some people are almost scared of the word environmentalist, because they have a different view of what that means, but they would be surprised if they came and saw what we are doing."
