Jazz, psychedelic band to perform at The Silo

Bleed Stone band uses raw, unique rock sound

A live jazz performance, an experimental psychedelic band and a live disc jockey will all take the stage Saturday evening at The Silo. The performances will begin at 8 p.m. with Live Jazz Tonight, a local jazz band. Live Jazz Tonight features covers of John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Thelonious Monk and Charlie Parker.

Music provided by Village Green Records will close out the night from 12:30 to 3 a.m. with a live DJ set from DJ Ghost Dad Sr., a.k.a DJ Scrabble Yahtzee Bingo a.k.a. DJ Risque Tight Shorts.

The DJ set will incorporate an eclectic mix of music including dance, dubstep, electronic music and independent hip-hop. Featured artists in the set include Flying Lotus, Nosaj Thing, Gang of Four, Talking Heads and Funkadelic.

Bleed Stone will begin at 10:30 p.m. Lucas Kane of Bleed Stone describes his music as spontaneous, swirling combustions.
The band has released two albums in the last year, "Far From Gone" and "Nostalgiac."

Distortion, reverb and pitch bending are all incorporated in Bleed Stone's music, creating a wall of sound meshed between a washed-out guitar and reverberated vocals. The music doesn't pin itself down to a certain genre but does incorporate elements of psychedelic rock and shoegaze.

"All of my music is just spontaneous sounds that meant something to me at sometime," Kane said. "It's all raw. Each heartbeat is unique."

Travis Harvey, owner of Village Green Records, described Bleed Stone as a more aggressive shoegaze-type sound, citing elements of My Bloody Valentine from the shoegaze genre to elements of the early-‘80s English rock band The Cure.

Harvey said that while the heyday for the shoegaze genre was in the late ‘80s and early ‘90s, the genre is currently making a comeback.
Kane's latest album, "Nostalgiac," dives into the concepts of marine life, weather patterns, family conflicts, celestial travels and Kane's personal phobias. Throughout his childhood, Kane noted a particular interest in the sea derived from stories his grandfather would tell him about the Gulf of Mexico.

"I was filled with factoids about fish, shellfish, mollusks, crustaceans and, my favorite, sharks," Kane said. "He bred me to live by the bay."

Track five, "Aeroviaphobia," is a term Kane made up to describe his fear of heights and flying. Black box cockpit recordings are set throughout the track.

"Nostalgiac" and "Far From Gone" have both gained underground online popularity through the Shoegazer Alive blog and other homemade-lofi-psych blogs.

Due to production and distribution costs, Kane has been unable to release his music in a high-quality form. Instead, he has released all of his music for free via download.

In the future, Kane said he hopes to distribute his music on vinyl once he finds a viable distribution and manufacturing company. Kane produces everything on his own, making the studio cost zero.
Kane's musical influences include Sparklehorse, The Brian Jonestown Massacre, My Bloody Valentine, Bob Dylan, Modest Mouse and Built to Spill.

Bleed Stone is preparing for an upcoming tour with a full live band, including Jayson Homyak on guitar and bass and Ian Cokain on drums. Kane said in the next album, listeners should expect the usual swirls and washes of sound, but with a more organic feel.
