IU reviewing how dead student's absence not noted

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) — Indiana University officials are looking into how a student might have been dead in his residence hall room for a week or more without anyone reporting him missing.

Campus police say 21-year-old Gregory Willoughby of Indianapolis died in an apparent suicide by inhaling toxic gas from a mixture of household chemicals. He was found Tuesday in a closet of his room at Willkie Residence Center.

An autopsy estimated that Willoughby died five days earlier, but school officials say odor complaints around his room started April 4.

University spokesman Larry MacIntyre says it will review a "possible breakdown" in checking on a student who had missed class for several days.

Willoughby graduated from Warren Central High school and was a biochemistry major at IU in the prestigious Wells Scholars program.
