Indiana mail-in ballot requests low despite hot races

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Absentee ballot requests for the Indiana primary are low or unchanged compared to the 2006 primary, despite a hotly contested Republican Senate race and two open congressional seats.

The deadline to request absentee ballots was midnight Monday.

Eight Republican candidates are vying for the vacant 8th district congressional seat, and 13 campaigning for the 4th district seat. Also up for grabs is the Senate seat vacated by retiring Democratic Sen. Evan Bayh.

In Muncie, the number for this year's absentee ballot requests are lower than in 2006. The total number of asentee voters was 2099 in 2006, compared to the 1,361 for this year's primary elections.

IUPUI political science professor Brian Vargus says the low turnout is surprising given the unusual primary with so many candidates and several heavily contested races.

He says diminished absentee and early voting participation likely indicate a low turnout primary.
