Hundreds clean roads after Little 500 arrests

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) — Police officers nabbed nearly 300 people on misdemeanor charges during festivities surrounding Indiana University's Little 500 weekend.

Hundreds of those people lined up Sunday outside the Monroe County Justice Building in downtown Bloomington to take part in Little 500 Court. That is a pretrial program officials started several years ago to handle the weekend's large volume of arrests and tickets.

County prosecutor's office executive director Beth Hamlin says parties before and after Saturday's annual race led to most of the charges such as public intoxication or illegal consumption.

The Little 500 Court allows the misdemeanor charges to be dropped against those who pay a $423 fee, complete three hours of road crew work and attend an alcohol education class.
