Gora denounces Facebook group for Ball State butt slapper

President Jo Ann Gora released her President's Perspective this morning commending University Police Department for how it handled the assault cases Wednesday morning and expressing her disappointment for part of the Ball State University student body.

She said she appreciated the victims stepping forward to file police reports and it will allow UPD to pursue a resolution. She said the purpose of the notifications was to raise awareness about the incidents.

Gora said the Facebook fan page The Ball State Ass Slapper was insensitive and disrespectful to assault victims and to the Ball State community. She also said the attempt at humor "misses the mark badly and is an embarrassment to the university."

"I am disappointed by the reaction of a portion of the student body," she said. "The creation of a Facebook page mocking these incidents and inviting similar behavior for fun goes beyond poor judgment. Such mimicking and mocking has the effect of condoning strangers to violate personal space and touch others without warning."

The fan page surpassed 8,000 fans this morning and is approaching 8,500.

Gora said community members' personal safety is important and, while the incidents on Wednesday were isolated, people should still be respectful.
