"Featuring Loretta" documents inner struggles

Actors, stage crew spent weeks preparing, producing play

Loretta is a young woman trying to figure out her life in the midst of a number of problems. She feels that she is quickly losing control, especially after her husband's death, so she moves to a motel, meets some interesting characters and agrees to make a sex tape for money.

Cave Theatre will be performing Loretta's story in "Featuring Loretta" at 7:30 p.m. today through Saturday and 2:30 p.m. Sunday in the Arts and Communications Building Room 7. The main focus of the play is the exploration of a woman and how she deals with problems.

"It's about this woman trying to be in control for once," Danielle Kelly, the freshman acting and communication studies major playing Loretta, said.

Director Dustin Casey, junior theatrical studies major, said that many times, people tend to take the easiest route to avoid problems, but that leads to serious consequences in many cases, something Loretta herself realizes.

"People would rather run away from their problems than deal with them," Casey said.

Freshman musical theatre major Meghan Conley, who plays Sophie, the motel owner's daughter and maid in the production, said that this is a show students should not miss because it's funny.

Kelly agreed and said that students will have fun watching the show because the cast has fun doing it. She said that a lot of talented people have put in the work and it will show on stage.

"I think students should come see the show because it is a hilarious show," Kelly said. "It's a great time. If we're having fun with it, then the audience will."

For six and a half weeks, about 15 people have worked to complete the production. That number includes the four cast members, the director, stage manager, crew members and more. Casey said that it has been a group effort to put everything together successfully.

"It's been a very collaborative and exciting environment to be in," Casey said.

The individuals involved have had to do a lot of work on their own, including Conley. Her character Sophie is a Russian immigrant, so she has had to take dialect coaching two days a week since the end of February. She also had scene work with other cast members and memorizing lines, which in particular she said is "never fun."

Kelly said that she has put a lot of time, work and rehearsal into preparing for her role as Loretta. She has spent a lot of time, with the help of Casey and her fellow cast members, trying to put herself in the environment and finding her own relation to Loretta.

"She's a lot different than I am," Kelly said.

Despite all the hard work, the process as a whole has been rewarding. Conley has enjoyed putting the production together and working with others in doing so.

"We trust each other on stage," Conley said. "I think that's so important."

Conley attributes much of the group's success to Casey, saying that he has been a great director by knowing when to stop and when to keep pushing the cast members on. Kelly agrees, saying that Casey has really made the experience an amazing one.

"Dustin's great, he really is," Kelly said. "He's been a real pleasure to work with."

Through production, run-throughs, scene development and character development, Casey has confidence that opening night and the shows that follow will run smoothly and successfully.

"I have full faith in my cast and crew," Casey said. "We have done exceptional work."

There may be some nerves involved with opening night, but Kelly said it's nothing to worry about.

"It's a good nervous," Kelly said. "It's excitement."
