Downtown Muncie now has a smoothie and ice cream shop after one of the city's lesser-known shops opened it last week.
The Island Muncie, a smoothie and ice cream shop tucked behind the Olive Garden on McGalliard Road, now has a location, The Island Café, in the same building as the downtown Muncie Ballet Studio.
Roger Conatser, one of the café's partners, said the downtown shop won't have palm and banana trees, sand or a waterfall like the main location, but it will have an island theme and "it'll be a nice little place to hang out when you're downtown."
It won't have a full menu — smoothies and ice cream mainly — but it will offer a few chicken entrees with rice.
He said downtown has "gotten quite a shot of rejuvenation" recently, with businesses openeing and Ivy Tech moving in. The decision to open the store was helped by the increased amount of foot traffic downtown.
The café had its soft opening April 8. Conatser said there hasn't been much advertising or signage, but that should come with the next few weeks. The ballet studio has a big production of "Peter Pan" this week which should make the shop visible to Muncie residents. The café will share space with the studio, but the two will be separate, he said.
He said he's seen a few customers so far, but it's been pretty quiet.
It also has exhibition space for people who want to sell their art with a small commission going to The Island Café. There also will be a boutique that sells accessories such as butterfly wings, tiaras and other items one may not usually find in a store.
