Construction on Jamba Juice to begin soon

Dining Services is scheduled to meet with contractors today to decide when to start construction on Jamba Juice and to discuss cost.

Jamba Juice, a healthy brand of smoothies, juices, teas, baked goods and more, will replace the café in the Ball State Bookstore.

Jon Lewis, director of Campus Dining Services, said the reason for changing the Barnes and Nobles café is because Dining felt that smoothies were something Ball State University lacked. He said after talking to students in Student Government Association and other leaders on campus, it was agreed upon that Jamba Juice would be a good change for the campus.

"[I] think the bookstore expressed an interest in maybe divesting themselves of the coffee concept they were running," Lewis said. "And Dining thought it would be perfect space for a smoothie concept, which we currently do not have in our menu inventory."

According to jambajuice.com, the company has more than 700 locations nationwide. Its mission is to be the leading healthy lifestyle brand to offer consumers "great-tasting and better-for-you products."

Freshman Amillie Davenport said she likes the idea of the change and that she'll probably come to the location a lot more.

"I think it'll be good because Jamba Juice is amazing and it'll make more of a variety for us," she said.

Freshman criminology major Emily Switzer said she comes to the café often, but she doesn't think the change of products will interfere with her coming to the location.

"I don't think it'll really affect me because I don't always come here for coffee," she said. "I just kind of sit here and work on homework and study."

Megan Jackson, who is a barista at the café, said there are a lot of regulars that come in to get brewed coffee. She said if Jamba Juice does not offer brewed coffee for those customers, then she doesn't think they will continue to come.

"I think it would be different. It would bring in new customers," she said. "I mean, there's already two other Starbucks on campus, so it wouldn't be that bad."
