The cause of a fire in a neigborhood south of campus is still under investigation.
Battalion Chief Terry Moore said the cause is still unknown, but the fire in the abandoned house at 221 S. McKinley Ave. did about $40,000 of damage to the structure.
It took firefighters about 20 minutes to put out a blaze that ruined the house.
Capt. Brian Manship of the Muncie Fire Department said he thought the fire started in the back of the house on the first floor. He said it didn't pose any unusual problems and no trees or neighboring houses were ever in danger.
Manship said 13 firefighters worked to put out the blaze as heavy smoke traveled northwest to the neighborhoods bordering Ball State University's south end.
Muncie and University police departments closed a few blocks of McKinley Avenue while the firefighters worked in front of a few packs of spectators. Muncie police officer Seth Stanley said the call was received at 12:50 a.m. and UPD responded first in about two minutes.
