Nominations for google fiber network community due today

Muncie's nominations for Google's experimental fiber network community are due today at 5 p.m.

The Muncie-Delaware County Economic Development Alliance has made several efforts to call out to the community to nominate Muncie to be one of Google's high-speed internet trial locations.

The city has been doing a series of community photos at places that highlight Muncie, such as Minnetrista, Muncie Civic Theatre and City Hall. A billboard was also put into place on McGallliard Road and two videos were made and uploaded to Youtube, one in which Mayor Sharon McShurley lists reasons why Google should choose Muncie.

Traci Lutton, assistant director of Business Development, said although it it impossible for the city to know the number of nominations, she felt optimistic about Muncie being nominated among other communites.

"I'm relieved to see it was only 600 communities [that have applied], and I feel great about it," she said. "We encourage still students and other communty members to nominate Muncie before 5 p.m."

Lutton said although the mayor filled out the official nomination form, anyone can nominate Muncie through a "short form."

Google will review the 190,000 responses to determine where to build, according to its Web site. It will conduct site visits and consult third-party organizations.

"Based on a rigorous review of the data, we will announce our target community or communities by the end of the year," the Web site announced.

Students and community members can fill out a nomination form at www.muncieheartsgoogle.com
