The Clinical Exercise Physiology Program at Ball State University is offering pulmonary function testing for $10 from Monday to Friday.
Pulmonary function testing is also known as lung function testing. The test determines how much air an individual's lungs can hold and how quickly air can be moved in and out. It is a tool used to screen for or monitor obstructive or restrictive lung diseases. This testing is beneficial to all individuals but is particularly recommended for those who currently smoke or have previously smoked, those with a history of asthma or chronic allergies and those frequently exposed to occupational dusts and chemicals.
Pulmonary function testing involves breathing into a mouthpiece that is connected to an instrument called a spirometer. The spirometer records the amount and rate of air an individual breathes in and out over a period of time, according to medlineplus.gov.
The testing can diagnose lung diseases and measure the severity of lung problems.
