Retired teacher group offering $2,000 scholarships

The Indiana Retired Teachers Association is accepting applications for eight $2,000 scholarships.

The organization will award one scholarship to a junior or senior education students in each of eight districts in Indiana.

IRTA President Nancy Tolson said the organization has been around for about 60 years and has been giving scholarships for about 15 years.

"We have set up the scholarships for education majors in order to perpetuate good education for the students of Indiana," she said.

IRTA works with education students and teachers as well as retired teachers because continuing to educate new generations is important to the organization, Tolson said.

Students must be Indiana residents and the son, daughter, grandson, granddaughter, legal dependent or spouse of an active, retired or deceased member of the Indiana Teachers Retirement Fund. Students also need at least a "C" grade point average.

The deadline is March 16. Applications and a full list of requirements can be found at IRTA's Web site at retiredteachers.org.
