The American Cancer Society chapter at Ball State University is recruiting more participants for this year's Relay for Life.
The group will set up tables in the Atrium from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. to register people who would like to volunteer and to hand out information about how students can contribute, chairwoman Molly Beck said.
The group also will have a second kickoff party tonight at the Museum of Art Ballroom to recruit more students. Food, music and information about Relay for Life and the American Cancer Society will be provided at the event.
The Ball State chapter had this school year's kickoff party Dec. 4 with about 40 students signing up to participate in the main event.
Beck said although the party had a good outcome, members of the chapter expect a larger turnout for this second celebration.
"There's going to be a lot more people out at the Atrium and we think there will be more people showing up at the kickoff party," she said.
Students will have until April 22, the day before Relay for Life, to sign up but are encouraged to sign up earlier to help raise more money and awareness. The money raised will go to the American Cancer Society.
Beck said teams will receive a page online through which they can raise money. Teams can also find other creative ways to raise money and awareness, such as by organizing activities on campus.
Last year, 51 teams participated in Ball State's Relay for Life and raised about $35,000. This year's goal is to raise $40,000 and have about 60 teams participating.
At the April event, teams will camp out on LaFollette Field and take turns walking around a track. Teams will carry banners and write cards while bands play all night. The event is an opportunity to celebrate survivors, Beck said.
