OUR VIEW: The Fruesday saga continues

AT ISSUE: ItGÇÖs time to make a decision about Fruesday and end the debate

Whatever your stance on Fruesday, it's clear that letting the day sit in limbo for months isn't going to solve anything.

It's been debated since October. The Undergraduate Education Committee and Campus Council both approved the measure.

The University Senate approved the bill for Fruesday's abolishment Thursday. It would like to change the calendar to have a week off for Thanksgiving Break.

But President Jo Ann Gora abstained from the vote. The motion was carried by the Senate, who still voted on the measure.

It's an endless cycle of decision making where, ultimately, no decisions are made.

The trade-off for Fruesday was the elimination of Saturday finals. Three years after the calendar was changed to include the hybrid day, students complain every year that the day is unproductive. Many students just leave for break a day early. Some professors cancel class. No one really seems to think it's working like it was supposed to.

A main problem with Frueday is students in Tuesday and Thursday classes miss an entire week of class, while those in Monday, Wednesday and Friday classes end up having three classes in a row.

The proposed fall schedule — making the one-day Fall Break the Monday of Thanksgiving week and eliminating Fruesday classes to give students and faculty a whole week off — has been approved by four University Senate councils.

Gora has several options at this point. She can forward the bill to another Senate body, reject it outright or approve it and send it to the Board of Trustees.

University Senate could change the bill and propose a different calendar change. They have just one month to make a new proposal, so that's unlikely to happen. This whole debate-and-approve process has taken almost four months.

This proposal might be the best idea. If it is, pass the bill. If it's not, find another way, because it's time to make a decision. The day is not effective. We all know it.

The best solution definitely isn't to suck it up and live with it.
