MEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Ball State's Imwalle to have surgery on injured knee

Ball State University outside attacker Marcus Imwalle will undergo surgery Friday to repair an injury to his meniscus and will be out for at least one month.

The amount time Imwalle will be out, coach Joel Walton said Thursday, will be determined on the type of surgery performed to fix the knee ligament.

It is uncertain how much damage Imwalle did to his meniscus and two types of surgeries could be performed once doctors open up the knee, Walton said. If doctors elect to shave off portions of meniscus Imwalle will likely be out four to six weeks, but if they decided the ligament needs to be fully repaired Imwalle will likely miss the rest of the season, the coach said.

Imwalle injured his knee in Ball State's four-game victory against George Mason University on Jan. 29. In his fourth season with the Cardinals, the redshirt junior has started four matches this season and averaged 2.45 kills per game — third most on the team — at the time of the injury.

"It hurts our team's depth," Walton said. "He has put up good numbers. He gives us a good option. Without him we are not as deep."

With Imwalle out, Walton said Dominic Spadavecchio or Larry Wrather will start alongside Lee Meyer at the other left outside attacker position in Ball State's (6-2, 1-2 Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association) conference match against Quincy University (2-4, 0-1 MIVA) on Friday in Quincy, Ill.

Spadavecchio, a sophomore, has started the last two matches and is averaging 1.55 kills per game. Wrather, a freshman, has primarily come off the bench this season to spot serve and is averaging 1.19 kills per game.
