MEN'S BASKETBALL: Ball State in sole possession of 1st in MAC West with road win at NIU

DeKALB, Ill. – The Ball State University men's basketball team picked up a critical road win in conference play today by defeating host Northern Illinois 71-66 at the Huskies' Convocation Center.

With the win, the Cardinals improve to 13-11 overall and 7-5 in the Mid-American Conference, a half-game ahead of Central Michigan University. The Chippewas play host to the last-place University of Toledo tomorrow before Wednesday's cruicial MAC West bout against the Cardinals at Worthen Arena.

"Both teams really played a hard, real physical game," Ball State coach Billy Taylor said. "I was proud our guys for being able to find a way to win on the road, which is very difficult to do. This game obviously had a lot of importance to us, and I thought we came out prepared and did a really nice job."

Sophomore guard Randy Davis led the Cardinals with 20 points and a team-high-tying seven rebounds. Sophomore center Jarrod Jones added 16 points and seven boards.

For Northern Illinois (8-17, 4-8 MAC), losers of eight straight since starting MAC play 4-0, junior guard Xavier Silas had a game-best 30 points on 9-of-13 shooting with a game- and career-high 10 rebounds for the double-double.
