Pruis Hall was filled with gospel singing Monday night from the large crowd in attendance at the annual Gospel Explosion hosted by the Black Student Association.
The audience overflowed with energy as they rejoiced to the songs that praised God with each new performance that appeared on stage.
Tears overcame many performers' eyes as they belted out the gospel music that echoed off the walls of Pruis Hall.
BSA secretary and Black History Month coordinator Aleshia Smith said Gospel Explosion is a celebration of gospel that tries to promote another type of music other than the usual hip-hop, rap and country music played around campus.
Smith said she was happy with the turnout and that the energy, as well as the attendance, had improved from last year.
Chris Ellison, freshman BSA member, said the event was amazing.
"It was one of those things you have to experience," he said.
BSA adviser and assistant director of Student Life Tiffany Washington said the event was very uplifting. There were people clapping their hands and enjoying the atmosphere that can help uplift them for the rest of the semester, she said.
Washington said she was happy to have high school students in attendance this year.
Sanovia Garret, Muncie Central High School student, was the last performer of the night and sang a duet with her classmate, Rheaunna McDonald.
"I like using my gifts to bring other people into God," Garret said.
Gospel Explosion is one of the last events held in honor of Black History Month. The final event is being held today and is a community service event for the Boys and Girls Club in Muncie.
