Ball State University senior metals and jewelry major Annie Kilborn was recently named a winner in the 2010 NICHE Student Awards held in Philadelphia.
Kilborn won for her entry piece titled, "‘Insecurity for the Secure' Chest" in the Metal: Non-wearable, Sculptural category.
Kilborn said the piece resembles a treasure chest made out of keys she found at a thrift store and is meant to represent both security and insecurity.
"It's a containment piece that holds something that can be seen but also locks something away," she said.
Only 70 entries out of nearly 800 submissions were named as finalists in this year's student competition. From that group, 14 entries won awards in categories including ceramics, wood, metal, jewelry and glass.
Judging is based on technical excellence, both in surface and form and "a distinct quality of unique, original and creative thought," according to a press release.
The awards program, sponsored by NICHE magazine, the exclusive trade publication for North American retailers of American craft, "recognizes the outstanding creative achievements of American craft artists who produce work for craft galleries and retail stores," according to the release.
