American Cancer Society recruits more teams for Relay for Life

Wednesday's recruitment events for Ball State University's chapter of the American Cancer Society yielded two more teams willing to participate in Relay for Life.

Event chair Lyndsey Adams said a recruitment table and a concert in the Art Museum didn't attract as many people as she would have liked, but those two teams put the total at 40. She hopes at least 50 teams sign up for Relay for Life on April 23. Being at 40 now puts the group ahead of schedule at this point.

"I think that we just did a better job of pacing and setting short-term goals," she said. "[Rewaching the goals] is definitely a good feeling."

She said she realized Wednesday wasn't the best night for students to attend the concert. The weather probably discouraged some and the Rev. Jesse Jackson wasn't scheduled to speak when the event's date was chosen. Adams was happy with the results anyway, she said.

Students can register until the day of the event, she said, which is still 10 weeks away.

The group hopes to raise at least $35,000 this year. When Adams began as the survivorship chair, Relay for Life made about $12,000. Since then, the event has gained momentum, and last year people raised about $40,000.

Reaching this year's goal is going to take leadership from team captains, she said. If teams set goals and surpass them, they shouldn't have trouble raising money. Teams have raised about $3,000 so far, which doesn't sound like much, Adams said, but is right on target. Team building is the focus at the beginning, then shifts to fundraising.

The organization will have fundraisers later in the semester including a basketball tournament and a T-shirt sale. Dates and times haven't been determined yet.
