After swimming a match against nationally-ranked Purdue, the Ball State University men's swimming team will continue with more tough competition when it travels to Eastern Michigan University Saturday for a 1 p.m. start.
The Cardinals will be looking to snap one of the longest conference win streaks in the nation. The Eagles have won 51 straight dual Mid-American Conference meets, and haven't lost to the Cardinals since the 1991-92 season.
Coach Bob Thomas understands that taking down the Eastern Michigan would be a difficult task.
'They almost beat Purdue,' Thomas said. 'And they are the best in the MAC. So that gives you an idea of who we are up against.'
Despite being heavy underdogs, Thomas knows his team will be pumped up to return to MAC' action for its second conference swim of the season.
'Regardless of whether we are favorites or not, our guys will be ready for this match,' Thomas said. 'Conference matches bring out the best in us because there is a definite pride factor at stake.'
Whether or not it wins the meet, Ball State will benefit from swimming in the same pool that hosts the MAC Championships later in the year.
'It definitely helps [to swim in the pool] because it gives our young guys a change to experience the environment,' Thomas said. 'So during the mental training before the MAC Championships, they will already by comfortable with the environment. We want it to be as much like home as possible when we travel there the second time.'
After Saturday's meet, the Cardinals on Sunday travel to Fishers, Ind., to take on Butler University, Eastern Illinois University, Youngstown State University, and Valparaiso University in a five-team meet.
