GYMNASTICS: Southeast Missouri State edges Ball State in Cardinal Classic

Emmons, Wehrle win events

The Ball State University gymnastics team ---took second place in the Cardinal Classic, finishing with a score of ----190.325.

Southeast Missouri State University ---won the Classic with a 190.35. The University of Illinois-Chicago finished in third place with a 186.55.

The matchup between the Cardinals and the Redhawks was as close as the score indicated. Ball State won the vault and the balance beam while Southeast Missouri State won the floor exercise and the uneven bars.

The Cardinals (3-3) were led by freshman Emily Wehrle, who recorded her first event victory as a Ball State gymnast by winning the beam with a career-best 9.725. Sophomore Brittney Emmons recorded three podium finishes. Emmons won the floor exercise with a 9.8, finished in third on the vault with a 9.6 and finished in third in the all-around with a 37.85.

Senior Rikara Turner was the top Southeast Missouri State (4-0) gymnast. Turner won the all-around with a 38.225. Freshman Jordan Salsberg recorded two event victories for the Redhawks, winning the ' bars and the vault with a 9.7 on each. Salsberg finished in second in the all-around.

Illinois-Chicago (0-5) had one top three finish on the day. Sophomore Rachel Montoya finished in third on the beam with a 9.675.

Ball State returns to Mid-American Conference action next Sunday when it faces Northern Illinois University in a 2 p.m. start.
